Why Can’t New York?

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey revealed three design proposals for a new office building to be built over the New York Bus Terminal west of Times Square. One by Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners (center) looks like it will not only provide you with office space but also microwave your popcorn, intercept enemy missiles, and contact alien civilizations. And speaking of aliens, the Pelli Clarke Pelli design (left) is for those of us who wear aluminum foil hats to block out alien telepathic influences. And what can I say about the Kohn Pedersen Fox design (right)? Pretty much what I can say about pretty much all of KPF’s designs which pretty much says it all. In a world of truly interesting and sometimes great architecture (even if not always to my taste) – why can’t New York do better?
